Dominicana

I’ve never had to move to another country to escape poverty or war, though I swear 2020 seems to be leading us all down that road. Anyway… Our little Ana, only a teenager, is given away to a local man who wants, and wants, and wants. He wants her parents land. He wants Ana to live in an apartment cage in NYC. He wants to be rich. He wants other women than her. He wants, and wants. And Ana does, too, though she can never say it out loud. Luckily for us, Ana tells us what she wants and how she’ll get it.

A beautifully told tale of immigration in the mid 60’s, of America’s treatment of immigrants and their own views on Americans, of the Dominican Republic itself and her people’s dreams for a better life.
